Woody kelp gets its name from its dense, branch-like stipes. Generally found attached to rock reef and large boulders, woody kelp provides a mid-tier canopy cover to the forest. Unlike many kelp species in the Salish Sea, woody kelp is perennial, and has been known to live up to twenty-five years.
