The Pacific Red Octopus is the most commonly seen Octopus in Puget Sound. While red is its primary color, it can change colors for many reasons, including camouflage, courtship, and if threatened. One way to distinguish between a Pacific Red Octopus and a small Giant Pacific Octopus is to look directly under their eyes. If you see three eyelashes or papillae under the eye, then you are looking at a Pacific Red Octopus. If not, chances are you are looking at a Giant Pacific Octopus. Pacific Red Octopus primarily feed on small crab and mollusks.
